"Home" is an extremely personal experience for everyone. It is a place where one feels most comfortable, surrounded by people or items that make them feel secure, welcome, and content. The intangible feelings of happiness are embodied in the physical aspects of these places. For me, home is where I live with the people I love. But it is also in the items I walk by every day, use in daily activities, reach for instinctually... the essence of home is embodied in these items.
Inspired by the style of Nigel Poor’s Found series, I photographed items from around my home that create that feeling of being in one’s "right" place. These items have generational history, with some coming from my nana’s house, and others were collected by my mom. Each item holds an individual experience or memory but is connected through their personal importance. A well-worn pair of leather gloves smell like my nana. They carry her spirit into the next generation. A pair of Burpee clippers were a gift to my mom from her mom. They have a story to tell. For this reason, "Found at Home" is a reflective project, both for me and my viewers. I’ve used this project as an exploration of my home and what makes up that environment. For my viewers, I’d like them to recollect their idea of home and reflect on what makes it for them.
"Found at Home" was captured entirely in the studio. Each item was photographed in a white environment and through digital processing in Adobe Photoshop, the final images were given an x-rayed or scanned appearance. I chose to employ this effect to deepen the idea of exploration and re-examining these items.
